Bad news

Today (Sat.), I found out that VC’s partner has breast cancer. We dated a few years ago. I cried for the first time in a while. I was thinking about my mother, my student, and my ex.

We forget, too often, those women, and the women and men they know, who are in the midst of facing the most devastating news a woman can receive about her health.

How do we comfort these women or young men? What can we say that won’t harm them any more than the news they have received? How can we help? Can we? Should we concentrate on their primary needs? Should we offer them our ear, our shoulder, or more? What can we really do as outsiders?

Just as I tried to imagine how difficult it was for my mother to tell me, her only child, about her diagnosis, how does it feel to tell your partner? What would they be thinking or feeling?

My heart goes out to VC and her partner.
